This tiny café is located is in a covered passage alongside a barber shop and a hardware store. The building itself is in Bebek, an affluent neighborhood bustling with cafes and restaurants known for their great views of the Bosphorus. The Turkish word ‘acayip’ means strange, but it is informally used as an adjective or adverb to express admiration. The scenic view of a café can be ‘acayip’, meaning it’s very beautiful.
The design for the café revolves around the interplay between the strange and the scenic. As the space has no windows, the design of the wallpapers and custom furniture become the view. They can be read as an abstraction of a cityscape or pure geometry and color.
