For our second project for Üçgen CNC we continued exploring ideas developed for the first building. The typical building for a 4,000 m2 plot in an organized industrial zone consists of a plain and simple box for production, almost always clad in sandwich panels for speed of construction and cost efficiency and another, smaller box for administration usually with a more elaborate façade displaying stylistic variations from postmodern takes on the traditional Turkish house to a number of different contemporary trends in architecture. What’s common in almost all of these buildings is the clear separation of production and administration functions by architectural articulation.
The unusual right trapezoidal shape of the site and it’s relation to road access limits the number of options for site strategy. Making full use of the triangular volume left over from the rectangular production hall, the design unifies the two main functions. The acute corner of the triangular office block is the main entrance and the focal point of the project at the intersection of administration and production. Here the production hall is revealed with a fully glazed curtain wall to all visitors and employees right before they enter the building. From the inside the fully glazed north facing façade provides a broad view of the outside and the sky to production floor workers. The geometry of the modular saw tooth office façade facing north is optimized to block late afternoon sunlight.
